Eternal Spring: An interview with director Jason Loftus

Eternal Spring: An interview with director Jason Loftus

Eternal Spring is a documentary about the hijacking of broadcast television stations in the Chinese city of Changchun in 2002 by members of the Falun Gong religion to counter government narratives about their practice. The documentary recreates the event on its 20th anniversary, with visuals based on the works of comic artist and Falun Gong practitioner Daixong, who fled China in the aftermath of the hijacking.

The Upcoming sat down with director Jason Loftus to discuss working with Daixong on the film’s distinctive visual style, the challenges of representing a complex sociopolitical situation and the importance of telling stories about religious and ethnic persecution.
