“There are very seldom times you read other characters’ lines and laugh out loud on the first pass”: Christopher Chung on Slow Horses season four

“There are very seldom times you read other characters’ lines and laugh out loud on the first pass”: Christopher Chung on Slow Horses season four

An explosive start to season four, Slow Horses follows a gang of misfits led by Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb, as questions arise and events unfold surrounding the apparent death of one of their own. The show by Apple TV+ is based on Slough House, a thrilling book series by Mick Herron looking into the lives of MI5 rejects. Recently renewed for a fifth season just in January of this year, this recent instalment is aptly named Spook Street after the fifth Slough House book. It follows the deteriorating health of David Cartwright which leaves him vulnerable and prone to committing irreversible mistakes that lead River – his grandson – and the rest of Slough House down a rabbit hole of investigations that dig deeper into David’s past.

One of the key characters in Slow Horses is played by Christopher Chung: Roddy Ho is the tech-savvy member of Slough House whose obnoxious personality makes for some of the more interesting interactions throughout the series. Chung is known for originating the role of Kurt Kelly in the West End run of Heathers the Musical. Aside from his continuous presence as Roddy in Slow Horses, he’s also in Blitz, the upcoming film by Steve McQueen starring Saoirse Ronan, which will premiere at this year’s London Film Festival. The Upcoming interviewed Chung, discussing what new and old viewers can expect from this season, balancing the complexities in playing a character like Roddy Ho and the varied dynamics that can be found among the different characters in Slow Horses.
