Free chip pop-up with flavours from decades of food trends opens in London Fields for four days

A pop-up restaurant called CHIP will serve free chips in London Fields, east London, from today until Sunday 8^th November. The venue on Westgate Street will open from 11.30am to 7pm each day and will offer chips topped with flavour combinations drawn from several decades of food trends.

The menu presents chips with seasonings, sauces and dustings linked to different eras of eating habits. Three of the set serves show the range. Pomme de Terre draws on flavours associated with the 1990s and combines truffle oil, porcini mushroom dust and rosemary sea salt. Fall Fries takes its cue from autumnal flavours popular with millennials, with pumpkin spice, salted caramel and a cinnamon-sugar swirl. The Po-TEA-to is a Japanese-inspired option made with matcha, miso and yuzu, flavours that have gained popularity on social media in recent years.

Visitors are not limited to the set menu. They can also build their own combination from the available toppings, which the organisers say allow for more than a thousand variations.

The concept centres entirely on chips, so the menu has no mains, burgers or fish to accompany them. The toppings range from savoury, earthy profiles to sweet, dessert-style flavours, which suggests the pop-up is aimed at curious snackers as much as anyone looking for a conventional portion of chips.

London Fields, in the borough of Hackney, is a popular area for food and drink, and the four-day opening runs from Thursday to Sunday. The daily hours cover lunchtime and early evening.

Entry, chips and merchandise will all be free, subject to availability. No booking is needed and walk-ins are welcome.
