Ryan Gosling goes interstellar in Project Hail Mary, the latest sci-fi epic from the team behind The Martian and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Ryan Gosling stars as humanity’s unlikely saviour in Project Hail Mary, a sweeping new sci-fi thriller directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Adapted from The Martian author Andy Weir’s bestselling novel by screenwriter Drew Goddard, the film reunites some of the most inventive voices in science fiction and genre cinema.

Set deep in space, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a former science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there – or why. As the pieces begin to fall into place, he realises he’s been sent on a desperate mission to stop a mysterious substance that’s draining the sun’s energy and threatening all life on Earth. With time running out and Earth’s survival in his hands, Grace must rely on scientific ingenuity, instinct, and an unexpected companion to complete the task.

The film brings together a powerhouse team: Lord and Miller, known for Into the Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie, bring their signature mix of heart and humour to the genre, while Goddard’s screenplay channels the cerebral tension of The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods. Gosling leads a cast that includes Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub.

Produced by Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and Gosling himself, Project Hail Mary is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year – a genre epic with emotional depth, spectacular visuals, and a timely story about survival, memory and connection across the cosmos. The film will be released exclusively in cinemas, with a release date expected soon.
