Sara Berman proudly flies the flag for Great British design

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to our selection of clothing designers. You think long and hard before making the right choice for yourself. It’s about your style, your colour, your mood, and what you find personally trendy. There are so many factors to take into account.

If going down that retro 70s look, I suggest British based Sara Berman. Her look is fresh and so “Bridget Jones” that it makes you picture Mr Darcy sweeping you off your feet…

Imagine she started her business as a summer project in 1998 by creating a range of skirts. Soon after her success, her career set off thanks to many of her mother’s contacts in the fashion industry. Her sister, Amiee, followed in Sara’s footsteps and joined her company. The combination of these two Central Saint Martin graduates has so far proved to be a powerful team. Both women are creative, business-minded and have visions to take over the fashion world.

Their team does not end there. The last partner is their very own mother Helene. Helene is the perfect role model for her daughters. Her experience, knowledge and network within the industry have helped in the growth of this brand.

Sara’s designs have this undeniable elegance and versatility in her collections. Take this “Ward Clutch” for instance.  It is shrunken leather mixed with new and antique gold studs. Apart from being a snazzy piece to go out with in the evenings, it has a detachable strap making it practical when the last thing you want to do is hold on to something that isn’t your man or your glass of champagne.

Instead of the cliché envelope clutches, use the “Ward Clutch” with the “Lulu Dress” to create this retro chic look. The frills around the hem-line of this model are what make it special. It is an elegant silk dress that you can wear while giving a work presentation or out for drinks with the girls.

Combine the “Lulu Dress” with either the “Yvette Jacket” in Harris Tweed or the “Drape Jacket” in leather and you have two completely different looks immediately. It is all about your style.

The “Jools Dress” is in my eyes is the embodiment of 70s chic. The plunging neckline, figure-hugging waistline, and bell sleeves are what make this creation unique and playful.

Sara, Amiee and Helene’s flair for fashion have shown how this family business is still maturing. It’s all about team work and knowing your trade. Hats off to these women for flying the flag for Great British design!
