Hot Natured at the Roundhouse

Hot Natured at the Roundhouse | Live review

Hot Natured are an acclaimed and renowned collective of four international DJs – Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Luca C and Ali Love. Having just released their debut album Different Sides of the Sun, they are famous for several pop hits like Reverse Skydiving, Isis, and Alternate State with the voice of Roisin Murphy.

At the Roundhouse in Camden, Hot Natured played their synth-pop in front of a small crowd of youngsters. It is honestly a shame to see such good artists playing with such little effort, particularly when their label Hot Creation continues to produce excellent music and brings out great new talent. The live show saw the four musicians come onstage, together with good visual, which was perhaps the best part of the entire show. They had on stage a huge amount of instruments – laptops, bass, drum machines and keyboards – but there was no need for this when the music then sounds so weak and flaccid.

Unfortunately it seems like something has gone completely wrong. This show sounded like electronic music made to be liked by people who don’t know anything about house or deep house music; it was like being in a cocktail bar or hotel lounge. How it is possible that these internationally acclaimed artists, each one with a strong and educated background in house and electronic music, managed to create something so useless is honestly a total mystery.

Perhaps the Roundhouse wasn’t the right choice in terms of venue, as the sound and the volume seemed lost in the big circular room, but yesterday’s concert was simply not good at all.
