Muppets Most Wanted

Muppets Most Wanted | Movie review

Following the outstanding success of the 2011 revamp, Muppets Most Wanted is set to take the world by storm – again – with a new set of famous faces, as they join the iconic puppets in their insurmountably extraordinary sequel.

Starring comedian Ricky Gervais, the fabulous Tina Fey, and the hilarious Modern Family star Ty Burrell – as well as a myriad of wonderfully unexpected cameos from A-listers across the board – this sequel follows the triumphant return of the Muppets family as they embark on a world tour to attain international publicity. However, there’s a small difference – Kermit is kidnapped and replaced by the ominous (well, as ominous as a plush amphibian can be) Russian villain, Constantine the Frog, in his quest to abscond with some of the most precious riches the world has to offer.

On their travels, they cross paths with the French Interpol inspector (Burrell), with such an over-emphasised French accent and moustache that it’s a constant guaranteed laugh for all the family. Even more so, we have Tina Fey as a stern Russian officer in charge of a Gulag in Siberia, with questionable taste in men – and puppets. With Gervais as the laughably sinister, and simultaneously inferior to a puppet with a mole Dominic Badguy (“It’s pronounced Badgee, it’s French”), the film takes the already on-a-pedestal franchise to remarkable new heights, both as a film and a musical.

Teamed with Flight of the Conchords musician Bret Mckenzie, Cristophe Beck has again brought formidable songs to the caper comedy, as well as reintroducing the grand reprise of a beloved Muppets original from 30 years ago.

Coming to cinemas across the country this spring, Muppets Most Wanted is everything we all know and love about our favourite puppets – it’s a bombinating comedy, classic characters we know and love, and, at the heart of it, a must-see story that evokes emotions in us that may elicit the occasional tear or two.
