Blended

Blended | Movie review

It’s not the first time Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have collaborated for a romantic comedy. It’s not the second, either. In fact, Blended sees the third collaboration of this duo who play Jim and Lauren – initially an unlikely pair after a catastrophic blind date at Hooters, but the two soon realise they have more in common than they first thought. By a twist of fate, the pair end up at the same holiday resort with their families and are forced to get along.

Sounds like yet another typical romcom? On paper, yes. But what sets this film apart from the rest is its genuine hilarity. The whole audience was belly laughing from start to finish – either at Lauren’s son “the masturbator”, Jim’s daughters who are constantly mistaken for young boys, or at the random appearances of Terry Crews playing an African entertainer complete with a live backing chorus. Disney Channel star Bella Thorne gives a brilliant performance as Jim’s daughter Larry, who has suffered 15 long years of men’s hair cuts and “Dicks” tracksuits from her dad’s workplace.

Sandler and Barrymore are equally entertaining, and their onscreen chemistry makes them the perfect duo for this genre of movie. With the backdrop of luxury resort Sun City in South Africa, the visuals are also stunning and make for exotic viewing.

Hilarious, ridiculous and heart-warming, if you liked 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer, you’ll love this one.
