London restaurant Xi Home Dumplings Bay launches giant 1kg dumpling challenge

London restaurant Xi Home Dumplings Bay has launched a new food challenge at its Spitalfields location, inviting diners to attempt to eat a giant 1kg dumpling in under three minutes. The event officially began on 11th July, and will run for three months. Participants who successfully complete the task will receive several prizes, including a full refund of the £14.99 dumpling cost, a £50 voucher for a return visit and branded merchandise. They will also be featured in the restaurant’s Hall of Dumpling Fame photo collection and be included on a leaderboard tracking top performances. The challenge is open to all customers who book a table at the Spitalfields branch and select the “giant dumpling challenge” option from the online booking form. A vegan version is also available with at least 48 hours’ notice.

The dumpling, which is filled with pork and encased in the chain’s signature dough, measures over 30 centimetres in length and may be one of the largest of its kind in the UK. Due to its size, it must be both steamed and pan-fried to ensure it is cooked thoroughly. Its creators at Xi Home specialise in Northern Chinese cuisine, and advise diners to bring a strong appetite, saying, “Ready to take the challenge? Come hungry!”. 

The event is part of a trend in London’s food scene, where competitive eating may be becoming more popular. Other venues, such as Red Dog Saloon, have introduced similar promotions, including one offering £5,000 to anyone who can eat 13 burgers in 10 minutes.
