There was a palpable buzz at last night’s gala screening of Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey. Greeted by a flurry of excited fans taking selfies with drone replicas and John Boyega arm-in-arm with a pair of stormtroopers, we were sharply whisked off the rainy streets of London and into the awe-inspiring universe of Star Wars. After a short Q&A with Boyega (as hilarious and down-to-earth as ever), the screening began: an in-depth film documenting the making of the latest Star Wars sequel, The Force Awakens.

Right from the off, the documentary presents a meticulously detailed insight into the creation and filming of the 2015 movie. Zooming in on specific characters and elements of production, viewers discover the very personal journeys at the heart of the process that resulted in the epic seventh addition to the film series. It is fascinating to witness the individual creative touches pieced together as part of the huge project that is making a blockbuster film.

The documentary includes exclusive interviews with the cast and crew, alongside footage during production as well as from the original films of the 70s and 80s. The transition between the two eras is evidently an important element to the process, as care is taken to preserve original techniques and inspiration for new ideas is taken from old ones. As members of the original cast and crew are reunited, the documentary takes a moving turn and we witness the first read-through of the script where passions and emotions are high amongst the mixture of old and new cast.

Very much a documentary for Star Wars fans as well as for film enthusiasts, viewers can expect to delve deep into the behind-the-scenes world of the filmmaking process while learning a thing or two about Star Wars along the way. A passionate film about a unique and intense cinematic journey – not to be missed.
