Bon Iver – 22, A Million

Bon Iver – 22, A Million
Bon Iver – 22, A Million | Album review

Bon Iver’s third album, 22, A Million, will not be what most listeners expected. The entire record is packed full of eccentric effects and unpronounceable titles that may not be to everyone’s taste. Yet, lay back and listen carefully, letting the unusual sounds sweep over you, and you will be able to recognise Bon Iver’s serene musical talents that many have grown to love.

Tracks such as 00000 Million, 8 (circle) and 666 ʇ show hints of the peaceful acoustic folk sounds that awarded the artist international acclaim. Other songs on the album, including 10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄ and 715 – CRΣΣKS reveal a quirkier side to the musician’s style, relying heavily on a melange of electronic vocal and instrumental effects. Although some fans may struggle with these new techniques, these tunes are a brave and often intriguing display of a popular musician pushing his artistic boundaries.

While some of the effects prove to be a little harsh on the ear, the entire album takes listeners on a journey with plenty of twists and turns – with relaxing melodies quickly followed by energetic electronic beats. Sharing your enjoyment of the record, however, may become somewhat impeded by the bizarre choice of song titles, as they are laden with symbols that make them impossible to say out loud!

Overall, this highly anticipated album is likely to shock, entertain, bewilder and excite Bon Iver fans. His choice to make something a little different, whilst still including the intricate and tranquil sounds that are loved by many, reinforces his status as a leading alternative artist.
