MTV held its long-awaited Brand New for 2017 showcase at Camden’s Electric Ballroom last night (2nd February). The event features acts that MTV think will make a big impact on music across the next year, with Years & Years and Adele among those previouly shortlisted for the accolade.

2017’s show included the likes of The Amazons, who kicked off proceedings with a head-banging rendition of their song Black Magic, taken from their upcoming album out this summer. The aggressive and high-spirited performance by the band resulted in an impromptu mosh pit forming near the front of the performance area.

Things quickly calmed down as Bedford’s own Tom Grennan took to the stage for an ambitious acoustic set. While showcasing his raspy and soulful voice on songs including Praying and Sweet Hallelujah, the singer engaged with the audience, some of whom were still milling in during his set. “What you lot sayin’ then? Let’s all have a beer afterwards,” Grennan suggested.

Former nominee of Brand New for 2016 Sigala headlined the show. The British DJ brought a taste of summer to the Camden crowd on a wet February evening as he, along with a bevvy of vocalists, presented a collection of hit singles including Say You Do and Only One.

But the night truly belonged to Londoner Stefflon Don. The rapper blazed the stage as she performed the Jeremih and Krept & Konan assisted London, oozing bucket loads of confidence, with the concertgoers singing every word. The real highlight came when she did the infectious Real Ting as groups of women, of all shapes and sizes, took to the stage to celebrate being a “real ting”.

West London MC AJ Tracey was announced the official winner of the Brand New for 2017 title during the event, but he was unable to attend due to illness. He fought off strong competition from runner-up Stefflon Don and, witnessing the performance she treated fans to at the Electric Ballroom, it’s clear she is the one to watch.
