My Dad Wrote a Porno Live at the Royal Festival Hall
Last night, the multifunctional Southbank Centre hosted a full house of fanatics for a night of laughs and steamy stories. Jamie Morton and his buddies Alice Levine and James Cooper gave us a taste of all the “good stuff” in My Dad Wrote a Porno – just the right way to spice up a Monday.
For those who aren’t familiar, My Dad Wrote a Porno is a comedy podcast which is basically three friends making fun of Morton’s father’s attempt at writing the next Fifty Shades of Grey. While he reads the novel eloquently titled A Modern Story of Sex, Erotica And Passion. How the Sexiest Sales Girl in Business Earns Her Huge Bonus by Being the Best at Removing Her High Heels, Levine and Cooper stop him with brisk jokes, ruthlessly critiquing the wild tale to which they are listening.
Yesterday’s chapter was team building with Belinda and her colleagues and with Natasha, the guru. A simple game of dice takes everyone to a striptease session which – well, anyone can imagine how it ends. Things get graphic. So graphic, in fact, that the audience need a guide to understand the female reproductive system. Morton’s father – who writes under the pseudonym Rocky Flintstone – appears to be clueless in this area. So, Levine enlightens millennials with her guide to a woman’s sexual anatomy – one of the peak moments of the show.
Indeed, the prose weirdly goes from detailed erotic moments to parts where the sentences feel as if they have been lifted from Pride and Prejudice. But the story is so ridiculous that it is genius. The audience can’t believe what is going on or, let’s face it, who on earth could have written this, but that’s what makes it hilarious.
One of the best moments of the night – which make the live show a plus – was the acting out of the novel by two members of the audience, while Morton narrated. Oh boy, everyone laughed. And the woman that performed as Natasha was built for it. Who would have thought that real people could do what Flintstone describes? London got it yesterday, and it was insane.
It’s silly, sexy and intriguing. So if you have never heard of My Dad Wrote a Porno, listen to their podcast and prepare to become hooked on Belinda’s sensual story. Who said it wasn’t fun to talk about sex?
