16 Days 16 Films: An interview with Charlotte Daniel and Sophie Anne Scarfe on Eyes Down

16 Days 16 Films is an initiative to highlight 16 films that explore, emote and educate on forms of gender-based violence, and championing female filmmakers and their work.

We had the pleasure of speaking to some of the winners, including the director of Eyes Down, Charlotte Daniel, and the film’s lead actress Sophie Anne Scarfe. The four-minute short depicts Mary, a trans woman early in her transition, on her first trip on a public bus in Glasgow. With shots brought up close to her every expression, viewers are invited to experience the journey from her perspective. In turn, it asks its audience to empathise with her and feel in a visceral and immediate way how the reactions of strangers can impact a person, even when doing something as everyday as travelling on the bus.

Charlotte Daniel and Sophie Anne Scarfe told us about how they came to work together, what they hope to have conveyed through their powerful short film and the importance of representation on screen.
