Dabiz Muñoz retains the Best Chef in the World title at Madrid awards ceremony

The Best Chef Awards have returned for a sixth edition in Madrid, with a gala ceremony revealing the list of 100 best chefs in the world. Dabiz Muñoz of DiverXO has triumphed for a second consecutive time, a clear sign of appreciation for his unpredictable, cutting-edge cuisine that he justifies with the motto “avant-garde or die”. Britain-based chefs Clare Smyth, Heston Blumenthal, Gareth Ward, Santiago Lastra and Jeremy Chan have reached, respectively, the 35th, 40th, 77th, 84th and 91st positions, with Pierre Koffmann being honoured with the Legend Award.
On top of the list, the Best Chefs Awards have granted 12 special recognitions, and two more of these have also fallen to Dabiz Muñoz.
The Best Chef Voted by Professionals: Dabiz Muñoz (DiverXO, Madrid, Spain)
The Best Chef Pastry Award: Antonio Bachour (Bachour, Coral Gables, United States)
The Best Chef Pristine Award: Ana Roš (Hiša Franko, Kobarid, Slovenia)
The Best Chef Dining Experience Award: Anne- Sophie Pic (Pic, Valence, France)
The Best Chef FoodArt Award: Natsuko Shoij (Éte, Tokyo, Japan)
The Best Chef City Gourmet Award: Dabiz Muñoz (DiverXO, Madrid, Spain)
The Best Chef Innovation Award: Josh Niland (Saint Peter, Sydney, Australia)
The Best Chef Rising Star Award: Jessica Rosval (Casa Maria Luigia, Modena, Italy)
The Best Chef New Entry: Riccardo Camanini (Lido 84, Gardone Riviera, Italy)
The Best Chef Pizza Award: Franco Pepe (Pepe in Grani, Caiazzo, Italy)
The Best Chef Legend Award: Pierre Koffmann (Tarbes, France, 1948)
The Best Chef Science Award: Andoni Luis Aduriz (Mugaritz, Rentería, Spain)
The goal of this awards ceremony is to create a network of thinkers and leaders in the gastronomic world, and to highlight their working methods; the focus is on the chefs and their approach to cooking, rather than their restaurants’. Making delicious food is not enough to enter the list – the voters look at creativity, critical thinking, innovation (also through the adoption of technology), sustainability and the positive social impact of their work.
The voting panel
The annual classification of the best chefs in the world is the result of the opinions and votes of 350 people. This new list is decided by the 100 chefs that appear in the current ranking, a further 100 chefs chosen for the occasion and a selection of 150 experts (journalists, critics, connoisseurs, photographers) who are responsible, in turn, for the nominations.
With Madrid as home to the sixth edition of the Best Chef Awards, the gala was preceded by two days of talks and meetings focusing on contemplation and exchange of knowledge, which are known as Area Talks and Food Meets Science. They aim to provide inspiration to hundreds of attendees, journalists, chefs and gastronomes from more than 30 countries. The city of Madrid offered the opportunity to explore the history of the city and region, its idiosyncrasies, its architecture, its culture and its wide range of culinary traditions and avant-garde restaurants.
Previous editions of the Best Chef Awards have taken place in Warsaw, Milan, Barcelona and Amsterdam. Dabiz Muñoz was preceded to the winning podium by Joan Roca (twice), Björn Frantzén and Rene Redzepi.
