“It’s such a timeless story and one that Richard Curtis told in such a funny and unique and poignant way”: Sam Boyd on Genie

Genie is a Christmas movie written by acclaimed rom-com filmmaker Richard Curtis and adapted from his original 1991 film titled Bernard and the Genie. Set against the picture-perfect backdrop of New York City, the feature takes a festive slant on the well-loved genre Curtis is so accomplished in creating, whilst also gracing the narrative with some magical Disney-esque charm.

When family man Bernard (Paapa Essiedu) finds work overshadowing the time with his family and causing problems at home, he wishes he could turn back the clock and make everything perfect again. After rubbing an old antique jewellery box and releasing Flora the Genie (Melissa McCarthy) she grants him the priceless gift of unlimited wishes. The feature then tumbles through chaos, mischief and the many layers of emotions that make this movie so festive and heartwarming.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to the director Sam Boyd about the background to this movie, the unique storyline and working with a legendary screenwriter. He also talked about some of the brilliant moments with Melissa McCarthy in developing her character Flora and what it was about the script that he was drawn to.
