Girls on Film Podcast announces 2024 award nominees with Barbie and Poor Things at the forefront

The Girls On Film Podcast has revealed its nominees for the 2024 Girls On Film Awards, with the summer blockbuster Barbie and the film Poor Things leading the nominations. The awards ceremony, scheduled for 20th February 2024, at Regent Street Cinema in Central London, celebrates women-focused films that excel in diversity, inclusion, and representation of women and marginalised genders.

Barbie has secured nominations in five categories, including the Fiction Feature Award and the newly introduced Costume Design Award, acknowledging Jacqueline Durran’s work. Poor Things is also a strong contender, with nominations including the Production Design Award and the Female Orgasm Award, sponsored by Intimacy On Set, for Emma Stone’s performance.

The Girls On Film Awards, now in their third year, are set to take place just after the EE BAFTA Film Awards and in the lead-up to International Women’s Day. The event will be hosted by Anna Smith, the podcast’s host, and executive producer Hedda Archbold. It will gather nominees, patrons, and past award winners, with tickets available to the Girls On Film community and the public from 27th January 2024.

This year’s awards also recognise films by male directors that support women’s empowerment, with the Girls On Film Award for Male Ally sponsored by IMDb. Nominees in this category include William Oldroyd for Eileen, Paris Zarcilla for Raging Grace, and Davy Chou for Return To Seoul.

Organisations such as Reclaim the Frame, Tape Collective, and We Are Parable are acknowledged in the Activist Impact Award category for their work in championing underrepresented perspectives in cinema.

The Girls On Film Awards are decided by a voting body of leading and diverse women film critics from the UK, as well as male allies who have participated in the Girls On Film podcast. The awards aim to recognise and celebrate the representation of diversity and complex female characters on screen.
