War Horse embarks on a major UK tour to mark historic anniversaries

The National Theatre’s acclaimed stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel War Horse is set to captivate audiences across the UK once again with a major tour starting on 5th September 2024. The production, which has won over 25 international awards and been experienced by more than 8.3 million people globally, will launch its 18-month tour at the New Wimbledon Theatre, moving on to various venues including The Lowry in Salford, the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton and more, with further dates to be announced.

War Horse is renowned for its extraordinary storytelling, which follows a young boy, Albert, and his horse Joey, against the harrowing backdrop of World War One. The production’s pioneering use of puppetry, by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, alongside its evocative music and songs, has set a benchmark in theatrical innovation since its premiere in 2007.

Director Tom Morris expressed his privilege at revisiting the production, emphasising the enduring relevance of its anti-war message. Author Michael Morpurgo celebrated the return of War Horse to the stage, highlighting the story’s powerful exploration of themes such as family, community and reconciliation.

The tour coincides with the 110th anniversary of the First World War’s outbreak and the 40th anniversary of Morpurgo’s best-selling novel’s publication. Kate Varah, Executive Director of the National Theatre, expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to share this “moving and spectacular” production with audiences once more.

Creative development for the new tour is led by Tom Morris, with revival direction by Katie Henry and reimagined designs by Rae Smith. The production features additional music by Adrian Sutton and innovative puppet design by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler.

War Horse first premiered on 9th October 2007 at the National Theatre and has since been performed in 97 cities across 14 countries. The upcoming UK tour promises to continue the legacy of this theatrical phenomenon, with assisted performances available at each venue to ensure accessibility for all audiences.
