Kim Gordon explores masculinity and capitalism in new single I’m a Man from her forthcoming album The Collective

Kim Gordon, the musician and visual artist known for her work with Sonic Youth, has just dropped a new single titled I’m a Man from her upcoming second solo album, The Collective, which is set for release on 8th March via Matador Records. The song was accompanied by a music video that showcases Gordon’s contemplation of the evolving concept of masculinity and its relationship with capitalism. The video, featuring performances by Coco Gordon Moore and Conor Fay, is directed by Alex Ross Perry, a filmmaker recognized for his works Listen Up Philip and Her Smell.

The new track follows the critical acclaim of Gordon’s first single from the album, BYE BYE, which also featured a video with Moore. Gordon is scheduled to embark on a brief US tour in spring 2024 to support the album. The tour will kick off on 21st March in Burlington, Vermont, and will include stops in Washington, DC, New York, Los Angeles, Ventura and San Francisco.

The Collective is the successor to Gordon’s 2019 debut No Home Record, and continues her collaboration with producer Justin Raisen, known for his work with artists such as Lil Yachty and Charli XCX. The album is said to delve into the themes of communication, commercial sublimation and sensory overload, with Gordon’s lyrical prowess intertwined with Raisen’s experimental productions.

Gordon has been a prominent figure in the alternative music scene since the 1980s, and her latest solo work further cements her status as a forward-thinking artist unafraid to tackle complex social issues through her music. Fans can expect a ten-track journey through Gordon’s unique sonic landscapes, with The Collective promising to be a deeply introspective and provocative record. Check out the new music video below.
