Star-studded FING adaptation begins filming in Brisbane, set for Sky Cinema premiere

An upcoming film adaptation of David Walliams’s popular children’s book FING is currently underway, featuring a star-studded cast including Academy Award winner Taika Waititi and Mia Wasikowska. The production, which began principal filming at Screen Queensland Studios in Brisbane, Australia, is set to premiere on Sky Cinema in the UK. The project, driven by a collaboration between UK-based King Bert Productions and Queensland-based Story Bridge Films, promises to bring Walliams’s imaginative narrative to life on screen.

The plot of FING centers around the Meek family, with Blake Harrison and Wasikowska playing the roles of Mr and Mrs Meek. The story unfolds as they undertake a perilous quest to fulfill their daughter Myrtle’s wish for a mythical creature known as a Fing. Newcomer Iona Bell portrays the demanding Myrtle, whose insatiable desire for more leads her family into a dark and untamed jungle.

In their quest, the Meeks encounter a series of challenges, including a confrontation with the evil animal park owner, The Viscount, played by Waititi. The film also features Penelope Wilton as the Viscount’s Nanny, Richard Roxburgh as the Bank Manager and Robyn Nevin as the Chief Librarian, adding depth to the ensemble cast.

The adaptation is co-written by Walliams and Kevin Cecil, with Jeffrey Walker, known for his work on The Portable Door and The Artful Dodger, directing the feature. The production benefits from the support of Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy, which aims to bolster local film industry opportunities.

Walliams, who also appears in the film as Myrtle’s headmaster, expressed his enthusiasm about the adaptation. “FING is such a fun and visual story with so many flights of fancy and I can’t wait to see it come to life on screen,” Walliams stated. He also praised Waititi’s involvement, highlighting his multifaceted skills in comedy and directing, which are anticipated to enhance the portrayal of the antagonist.

Waititi also shared his excitement about the role, noting the script’s unique blend of dark humour, which resonated with his own artistic sensibilities. “When I read the script, I instantly felt David’s unique and quirky wit jump off the page. There’s a dark humour and edge to FING and I’m excited to bring the eccentric Viscount to the screen,” Waititi remarked.
