Universal Pictures releases new Bridget Jones film for digital purchase while still in cinemas

In a novel approach to film distribution, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the latest installment of the Bridget Jones series, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, will be available for digital purchase and rental from 31st March 2025, while still being shown in cinemas. This move allows fans to enjoy the film at home or on the big screen across the UK.

The film sees Renée Zellweger reprise her role as Bridget Jones, the iconic character that has become a staple in the romantic comedy genre. In this chapter, Bridget navigates life as a widowed single mother, dealing with the complexities of raising two young children while attempting to move forward in her personal and romantic life. The story picks up with Bridget four years after the death of her husband, Mark Darcy, portrayed by Colin Firth, who was killed during a humanitarian mission.

The cast also includes Hugh Grant returning as Daniel Cleaver, alongside new additions such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leo Woodall, Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones and Isla Fisher. The film, directed by Michael Morris and based on the novel by Helen Fielding, presents Bridget’s struggles and triumphs in a relatable and heartwarming manner.

The digital release will feature exclusive content not available in cinemas, including deleted scenes and featurettes with insights from the cast and crew. These extras provide a closer look at the evolution of Bridget’s character and the creative process behind the latest film.

The production by Working Title Films, known for its successful track record with the Bridget Jones franchise and other acclaimed films, is produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, along with Jo Wallett. Executive producers include Helen Fielding and Renée Zellweger, among others.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy offers a contemporary look at Bridget’s life as she grapples with the challenges of modern single parenthood and re-entering the dating scene. This release marks another significant chapter in the beloved Bridget Jones saga, continuing to engage viewers with its blend of humor, romance and human insight.
