Cannes 2025 lineup announced: From Anderson to Ducournau and Dickinson, big names and bold debuts

The 78th Festival de Cannes has officially announced its selection of films for this year’s event, as revealed by Iris Knobloch, the President, and Thierry Frémaux, the General Delegate, during a press conference on 10th April 2025. The prestigious film festival is scheduled to take place from 13th to 24th May 2025, on the Croisette in Cannes, France.

This year’s lineup includes a diverse array of films from both seasoned filmmakers and newcomers. The festival will open with Partir un Jour by Amélie Bonnin, marking her debut feature, which will be screened out of competition.

In the main competition, notable entries include The Phoenician Scheme by Wes Anderson, Eddington by Ari Aster and Jeunes Mères by the Belgian duo Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. Other films competing for the coveted Palme d’Or are Alpha by Julia Ducournau, Renoir by Hayakawa Chie and The History of Sound by Oliver Hermanus.

The Un Certain Regard section, known for highlighting unique styles and innovative storytelling, will feature La Misteriosa Mirada del Flamenco by Diego Céspedes and Météors by Hubert Charuel among others. This section will also see several first-time directors such as Akinola Davies Jr with My Father’s Shadow and Scarlett Johansson with Eleanor the Great.

The Out of Competition category includes high-profile films like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning by Christopher McQuarrie and La Femme la Plus Riche du Monde by Thierry Klifa. The Midnight Screenings will showcase Dalloway by Yann Gozlan and Exit 8 by Kawamura Genki, anticipated for their thrilling cinematic experiences.

Cannes Premiere will present Amrum by Fatih Akin and Splitsville by Michael Angelo Covino, among others. Special screenings will also be a significant part of the festival, with Bono: Stories of Surrender by Andrew Dominik and Tell Her That I Love Her by Romane Bohringer, providing audiences with unique viewing opportunities.

The festival promises to be a vibrant showcase of global cinema, featuring a blend of established directors and promising new talent. With a wide range of genres and styles represented, the 78th Festival de Cannes aims to engage audiences and critics alike, maintaining its status as a crucial platform for cinematic expression and a key event in the international film calendar.
