First trailer drops for Jay Roach’s The Roses featuring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch

The first trailer for Jay Roach’s new film, The Roses, featuring an ensemble cast led by Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, has been released. Set in London, the film is slated to debut in UK and Ireland cinemas on 1st September 2025. Under the banner of Searchlight Pictures, the narrative examines the seemingly perfect life of Ivy (played by Colman) and Theo (played by Cumberbatch), which unravels as their careers take divergent paths, highlighting a mix of competition and underlying resentment. The Roses is a modern reimagining of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler.

Directed by Jay Roach, known for his work on comedy films like Austin Powers and Meet the Parents, the movie promises a blend of drama and themes of familial and professional conflict. The cast features a blend of award-winning actors and seasoned performers, including Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and others. The storyline addresses the complexities of a relationship strained by individual ambitions and societal expectations.

Colman, an Academy Award winner, and Cumberbatch, an Academy Award nominee, lead the cast, bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. Their portrayal is complemented by a script from Tony McNamara, who is also an Academy Award nominee.

The Roses aims to examine the dynamic and often tumultuous elements of love, ambition and rivalry within a marriage. Check out the brand-new trailer below.
