Annahstasia – Tether

In a music industry that can sometimes feel oversaturated, it’s refreshing to come across an artist and a voice that makes you tune in and take notice. Enter Nigerian-American musician, visual artist and model Annahstasia, whose record Tether, her full-length debut with label drink sum wtfr, is a wonderfully assured collection of songs.
Tether is a brilliant blend of folk and soul; so much richness and warmth flows through the 11-track album. Recorded through live takes in a studio in Los Angeles, the collaborative energy of the musicians and singers is transparent in each song. The music never feels crowded or busy, and the instruments are delicately layered to ensure that the lyrics and Annahstasia’s vocals shine through. And shine they do. Her voice is unique and soulful, with a certain earthiness and hunger that emphasises how much these songs mean to her. In combination with some of the musical elements and choices, she pays homage to the work of music giants such as Tracy Chapman, Joan Armatrading and Sade, but one can still hear the individualism of Annahastasia’s sound.
The second number on the album, Villain, is a stunning song that starts off softly but builds and grows into an anthem. Annahstasia’s alluring voice is championed by the subtle power brought by the brass instruments and the gorgeous backing vocals and harmonies. Just as memorable is Unrest, a simple yet enthralling folk piece reminiscent of the music of José González. Despite missing percussive instruments, a wonderful rhythm is created by the steadiness of the guitar and the softly syncopated patterns Annahstasia makes with her voice. It is a track that flows continuously, and the piano and woodwind provide delicate embellishments that all combine to leave a song that is rich and wholesome, and one that brings comfort and ease. The simplicity and unhurried nature of the music allows the sincerity of Annahastasia’s voice and the muted joy of the lyrics to be at the forefront; it is sublime.
Other highlights include Slow, which features the ethereal sound of Nigerian singer Obongjayar, who brings a delightful opulence to the song, and Overflow, which elevates the rhythm section with a strong drum groove at the centre. All Is. Will Be. As It Was is positioned in the album as a break from the more melodic offerings. It is eloquently performed by poet Aja Monet with a graceful poeticism and words that are expressive and meaningful. However, its impact would’ve been felt much more had it been placed at the end of the record.
Tether almost feels cinematic, as if through the music, one is granted access to a showreel of Annahstasia’s life and experiences. It seems personal to the artist, and yet undoubtedly there is a synergy upon which many will see their own lives reflected in the lyrics and ambience of the collection. With an album this well-considered and introspective, Annahstasia is sure to make her mark.
