MUBI has unveiled the first look at Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the latest film from I Saw the TV Glow director Jane Schoenbrun – and it looks set to continue their distinctive blend of horror, identity and surreal storytelling.

Starring Hacks breakout Hannah Einbinder alongside Gillian Anderson, the film plays with the idea of horror legacy and fandom gone wrong. It centres on a struggling slasher franchise handed over to a young director eager to revive it, only for things to spiral when she tracks down the original film’s reclusive star. What follows is described as a descent into a world of desire, fear and blood-soaked chaos.

If Schoenbrun’s previous work is anything to go by, this won’t be your typical horror. Their films have built a strong following for their offbeat, atmospheric style and exploration of queer and trans identity, and Camp Miasma looks set to lean even further into that unsettling, genre-blurring space.

The cast is stacked beyond its two leads, with appearances from Bodies Bodies Bodies’ Amanda Fix, The Bear’s Molly Gordon collaborator Eva Victor, Severance’s Zach Cherry, and Yellowjackets star Jasmin Savoy Brown, among others – suggesting a mix of indie sensibility and recognisable faces.

Produced by Plan B, the company behind Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave, the film arrives with serious pedigree, but it’s Schoenbrun’s voice that’s likely to draw the most attention. Their last feature, I Saw the TV Glow, became a breakout hit on the festival circuit and earned multiple award nominations, marking them as one of the most exciting emerging filmmakers working today.

No release date has been confirmed yet, but Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is set to arrive in UK and Irish cinemas soon, with MUBI handling distribution.

For fans of horror that pushes boundaries – and gets a little strange along the way – this is one to keep firmly on the radar.
