2025’s biggest blockbusters coming soon

After the turbulence of Hollywood’s 2023 strikes and a somewhat lukewarm 2024 box office slate, cinema in 2025 is back with a vengeance. Big-name directors are returning, genre favourites are making a comeback, and reboots, remakes, and reimaginings are on the menu once again. This year’s lineup promises high-octane action, nostalgic reunions and bold new entries across franchises, offering something for every type of moviegoer.
Among the most anticipated films is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which hit cinemas on 23rd May. Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt returns, joined by franchise mainstays Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames for what’s being teased as the saga’s swan song. Whether this really is the final mission remains to be seen, but with Dead Reckoning Part One underperforming financially, all eyes are on this instalment to reignite the fuse. Regardless of box office performance, the franchise is likely to see renewed momentum, including branded entertainment spin-offs such as the Mission: Impossible game and other online slots games.
Also set for 23rd May is Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, a family-friendly retelling of the beloved 2002 animated classic. Chris Sanders reprises his role as Stitch alongside newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo. With Auliʻi Cravalho, Zach Galifianakis and Hannah Waddingham in the mix, this version looks to blend nostalgia with a modern edge.
For fans of martial arts and heartfelt mentorship, Karate Kid: Legends (30th May) offers a compelling crossover: Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, each from different eras of the franchise, join forces to mentor Ben Wang’s next-gen Karate Kid. While loosely connected to Cobra Kai, the film appears to chart its own path, taking place a few years after the series’ conclusion.
In the realm of horror, Bring Her Back, also releasing 30th May, sees Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou explore themes of grief, foster families and sinister rituals. Their distinct brand of eerie storytelling, combined with a compelling narrative and strong performances, could make this one a chilling surprise hit.
Blockbuster season intensifies with Superman (11th July), the first major step in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. With David Corenswet donning the cape and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, this new take on the Man of Steel aims to reinvigorate a franchise in need of fresh energy. Similarly, Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps (25th July) finally brings the iconic quartet into the MCU fold, with Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby leading the charge under the direction of WandaVision’s Matt Shakman.
Later in the summer, Jurassic World Rebirth (2nd July) looks to reset the dino-dial; 28 Years Later (20th June) reawakens the rage virus with its original team, promising a return to the intense, fast-paced horror that made the original a cult classic; and From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (6th June) continues the assassin-laced legacy, now led by Ana de Armas.
With such a packed slate, 2025 is shaping up to be a cinematic feast. Whether seeking adrenaline, nostalgia or artistry, audiences can expect the big screen to be truly back.
