“For many twins, intimacy is innate in their upbringing”: James Sweeney on Twinless at London Film Festival 2025

“For many twins, intimacy is innate in their upbringing”: James Sweeney on Twinless at London Film Festival 2025

Written and directed by filmmaker James Sweeney, and starring himself as one of the main protagonists, Dennis, this film is a dark comedy-laced story that delves into the complex relationship between twins and the emotional bonds and trauma that can weave through it.

When the death of Rocky leaves his twin, Roman (Dylan O’Brien) and family devastated, Roman processes his grief by sifting through his twin’s belongings and attending a loss support group. As he struggles to cope with his trauma, he crosses paths with Dennis (Sweeney), who is also dealing with his own loss, and the pair form an unlikely bond that not only becomes obsessive as they become co-dependent, but also reveals secrets and twists that make this movie unpredictable and brutal.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to James Sweeney about why he wanted to tell this story on screen and the process of making such a complex and thought-provoking feature.
