Following its world premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, a North American debut at TIFF, and its UK bow at the BFI London Film Festival, A Pale View of Hills is set for UK and Irish release on 13th March 2026.

Adapted from Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro’s haunting debut novel, the film marks a return to literary territory for director Kei Ishikawa (A Man), who also penned and edited the screenplay. The story unfolds across two eras – 1950s post-war Japan and 1980s England – to trace the lingering psychological scars of war through one woman’s fragmented memories.

Suzu Hirose and Yoh Yoshida both portray Etsuko at different stages of her life. In Nagasaki, 1952, the young Etsuko, pregnant and isolated, forms a bond with the ostracised single mother Sachiko (Fumi Nikaido), whose presence challenges Etsuko’s constrained domestic life. Decades later in England, the older Etsuko lives with the echoes of personal tragedy, as her daughter Niki (Camilla Aiko) attempts to piece together her mother’s complex past – though Etsuko’s own recollections remain elusive.

Produced by Vue Lumière and Number 9 Films, the film blends Japanese and European creative forces, with cinematography by Piotr Niemyjski and a score by Paweł Mykietyn. Nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design at the 2025 British Independent Film Awards, it presents a meditative, visually rich examination of identity, memory and emotional inheritance.
