“I think cinema must throw questions into the air”: Juan Pablo Sallato and Nicolás Zárate on The Red Hangar

At the Berlin Film Festival 2026, we sat down with director Juan Pablo Sallato and actor Nicolás Zárate to discuss their powerful new feature, The Red Hangar. Sallato, previously a documentarian, spoke about his shift to fiction as a way to explore complex moral choices, stating, “I think cinema must throw questions into the air.” Inspired by a true story and the military experiences documented by Fernando Villagran, the film examines a soldier’s conscience during turbulent times. Zárate, who portrays the central character, described his intense connection to the screenplay’s violence and the urgency behind its moral dilemmas. Both artists share a belief that the film seeks to provoke deep reflection on history, humanity and our collective future, particularly in moments of upheaval.
