Veeraswamy marks 100th anniversary with Nostalgia menu celebrating a century of Indian cuisine in London
London’s Veeraswamy, widely recognised as the oldest surviving Indian restaurant in Britain, has launched a special Nostalgia menu to mark its centenary, offering diners a culinary journey through 100 years of the Regent Street institution’s history.
The commemorative menu, which was unveiled this week, celebrates the remarkable milestone of reaching a 100th anniversary – particularly in the competitive London marketplace and given the challenges for the hospitality industry in recent years. Veeraswamy first opened its doors in 1926 on Regent Street in London’s West End, founded by Edward Palmer, the grandson of an English general and an Indian princess. Over the course of a century, the restaurant has served a remarkable roster of guests, including Winston Churchill, King Hussein of Jordan, Jawaharlal Nehru and Charlie Chaplin, cementing its status as one of the capital’s most historically significant dining establishments.
The Nostalgia offering draws on an extensive archive to revive and reimagine dishes that have defined Veeraswamy’s identity across the decades. The selection reflects the evolution of Indian cuisine as it has been presented to British diners over the past century, from the colonial-era influences of its earliest years through to the more refined and regionally diverse cooking that has characterised the restaurant’s modern reputation. Dishes include an Anglo-Indian Mulligatawny Soup, with mains such as Hyderabadi Lamb Salan Curry (from the 1947 menu) and a selection of mithai confectionery for dessert.
The centenary sadly comes at a complex moment for the business. A landlord dispute relating to the Regent Street premises remains unresolved, casting some uncertainty over the restaurant’s longer-term future on the site it has occupied for a century. It has received significant support from patrons and locals, 11,000 of whom have so far signed a petition to save the Veeraswamy.
