John Travolta takes to the skies with directorial debut Propeller One-Way Night Coach at Cannes 2026
John Travolta is heading back to the Croisette this May, this time stepping behind the camera for the first time. The actor will premiere his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Cannes Premiere strand.
Best known for defining roles in Pulp Fiction, Grease and Saturday Night Fever, Travolta is no stranger to Cannes, but this marks a new chapter in his decades-long career. The film will debut at the Debussy Theater with the star-turned-director expected to attend, giving audiences their first look at a project that blends his cinematic legacy with a deeply personal passion.
Based on a children’s book Travolta wrote in the late 1990s, the film is rooted in his lifelong love of aviation. It follows a young boy, Jeff (Clark Shotwell), who embarks on a cross-country journey to Hollywood with his mother (Kelly Eviston-Quinnett). Along the way, what starts as a routine flight becomes something far more magical, filled with eccentric passengers, unexpected detours and moments that shape the boy’s future.
That aviation backdrop isn’t just a narrative device. Travolta, a licensed pilot with over 9,000 flight hours, has long been open about his fascination with flying, and the film draws heavily from his own experiences and childhood memories. It also features a personal touch in the casting, with his daughter Ella Bleu Travolta appearing as one of the flight attendants.
While the project arrives with clear sentimental value, it also marks Travolta’s first major creative step into directing, something that will likely be a key point of curiosity for festival audiences. The film has been selected for the Cannes Premiere section, often reserved for high-profile titles that sit just outside the main competition but still generate significant buzz.
For those not heading to the Riviera, there won’t be long to wait. Propeller One-Way Night Coach will be released globally on Apple TV+ on 29th May 2026, shortly after its festival debut.
The 79th Cannes Film Festival runs from 12th to 23rd May, with the full line-up set to be unveiled on 9th April 2026.
