Scottish Ballet reimagines Romeo and Juliet for the screen in These Violent Delights

Scottish Ballet’s first feature-length film, These Violent Delights, will receive its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival before opening in UK and Irish cinemas this autumn.

Directed by BAFTA winner Oscar Sansom alongside Scottish Ballet’s CEO and artistic director Christopher Hampson, the film offers a contemporary, dialogue-free interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Told through dance and centred on Juliet’s perspective, it unfolds as a fever dream in which memory, hallucination and movement intertwine to revisit the familiar tragedy.

Featuring Kayla-Maree Tarantolo as Juliet and Ishan Mahabir-Stokes as Romeo alongside the artists of Scottish Ballet, the production brings together choreography by Julia Cheng, Morgann Runacre-Temple, Myles Thatcher, Sophie Laplane, Nicholas Shoesmith and Andrea Azzari. Filmed at locations across Scotland, it marks the company’s first major feature after more than a decade of acclaimed work in dance on screen.

Building on Scottish Ballet’s award-winning work in dance filmmaking, These Violent Delights expands the company’s screen ambitions with a feature-length reinterpretation of one of Shakespeare’s most enduring stories, blending contemporary choreography with cinematic storytelling.
