Welcome to Belgium and L&A jewellery
Very few in-house jewellery companies exist outside of the Far East. In Antwerp, Belgium, in the heart of the diamond district, one such company still flourishes upon its uniqueness.
Twins Louis and August Van Camp originally founded L&A in 1967. Just over 40 years later the company is still running strong, thanks to the resilient nature of their offspring. It’s their family spirit that keeps them going.
The company literally deals with designs from A-Z. Rarely do you see original sketches on paper, later created by CAD (Computer Aided Design), cast, set and finished off at the workbench by a goldsmith. The whole process is far more complex than the average person may think.
Furthermore, L&A is the one of the only Belgian-made jewellery company to have a fixed booth at the most prestigious professional diamond fair on the global calendar, the Basel World Fair in Switzerland.
While older collections such as “Scented Garden” have demonstrated popularity in the past, the Van Camps are focusing beyond what is momentarily in fashion. They understand the diamond and jewellery industry as well as the needs of their clientèle.
Their most recent collection, to be presented at Basel World, comprises of diamonds that are almost paper-thin. It is quite a revelation. The design may look classic with all the minute diamonds around it, but it also has a sense of exceptionality to it too.
What is called the “Flying Saucer” is not the traditional run-of-the-mill design of a solitaire diamond surrounded by diamonds. The precision of the creation, the curves created is what sets it apart from your next-door jeweller.
The last piece I am selecting to show you is an engagement ring created for one of the family member’s daughter. The setting has a certain air of royalty, making it the ideal ring to propose with.
After more than 40 years, the Van Camp family, now in their second generation, are still proving that diamonds are undeniably forever. Their personal touch is what makes them the colourful family that they are. Ideas are constantly bounced off each other. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one.
