Ohh Deer Ohh Deer Ohh Deer!
It is hard being an artist. You struggle to make a name for yourself, yet alone some money. This is why it is always wonderful to see fellow artisans or people who appreciate art create opportunities for young upcoming artists – support such as this is what keeps the art world alive today.
Ohh Deer acts as a platform for artists to display their creativity. Established only in late 2011, Jamie Mitchell and Mark Callaby have both opened up remarkably many doors for the artists they take on. Their concept is simply to allow graphic illustrators to get as much exposure as possible. This team promises to do their best within their means. It is a step in the right direction many people are looking for.
The work Jamie and Mark presently have selected under their brand ranges from “ungodly cuteness to obscene vulgarity,” as they put it, and this variety is what makes Ohh Deer unique.
Jamie gave up his job in an architectural firm to pursue his dream of illustration. He is a highly gifted hand-drawer, as you can see from his piece below entitled Winking Bear. The precision in every line and his eye for detail are overwhelming. Jamie tends to draw inspiration from his natural surroundings.
Mark, on the other hand, always loved illustration but at one point thought he would never pick up a pencil again. That would have been an absolute shame if you see the humour in his work. He has a series of drawings entitled Finish Me Off. It is that little bit of vulgarity that makes you blush and giggle at the same time.
Nicholas Darcy, one of the illustrators contributing to Ohh Deer, has a very bold no-nonsense attitude. He draws inspiration from fashion and pop culture, as you can see from his illustration Amy. His next step is to start designing apparel, and Jamie and Mark both see the potential in this artist.
Harriet Gray’s Winter Moon is very different from the other artists mentioned already: her creations are sexier, seductive, and sultry, with this feminine touch that captivates you. Her use of watercolour, charcoal and crayon gives an edgy appearance.
Found You There by Sandra Dieckmann is more on the playful side in the graphic way she uses colour; it is borderline cute. She takes you into this magical Narnia-like world she has created for herself.
The duo of Jamie and Mark, having both graduated from Kingston University, balance each other out with their knack for finding hidden talent in others. I have a new found respect them. So thank you, Jamie and Mark, and everyone else who support upcoming artists. You see the talent and you believe. Thank you!
