John Fullbright – Songs

A gentle, bluesy album by folk artist John Fullbright, Songs is a wonderful record that many will enjoy, taking listeners on an individual journey for every song.

Opening track Happy was a clever way to begin, with Fullbright’s raw, blues-rock vocals on full display. The song is a compelling listen with a typical rock vibe to it. Following offerings, such as When You’re Here, are a lot more reflective in comparison, illustrating a vulnerability in the singer’s effortless storytelling and heartfelt lyrics.

This continues in later songs and it is Until You Were Gone that fully showcases the beauty in Fullbright’s reflective words; his enchanting lyrics match the softness of his guitar and his vocals. This song is truly a standout, with the universal themes of love and heartbreak sure to connect with anyone, making the whole timeless and relatable.

The album, overall, has quite a soft vibe to it, most evident in songs such as Write a Song and All That You Know, in which the listener is lost in wise words over minimal instrumentation and production. These are endearing moments that capture an array of feelings in mere minutes.

Ultimately, Songs‘ gentleness is a glowing success. A really outstanding record immerses its listeners in what the artist has created – ably achieved here with John Fullbright’s collection.
