Thank J Lo’s infamous Versace dress for Google Images

Jennifer Lopez has become known for her daring red carpet looks and her green Versace dress worn to the Grammy Awards in 2000 will go down in history as one of the most iconic looks of all time. According to Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt, J Lo was responsible for the creation of Google Images.

During an interview charting the evolution of the internet-search engine, Schmidt revealed that following the singer’s appearance at the awards in 2000, the relatively new website was inundated with requests to see the dress.

Lopez attended the Grammys alongside then-partner Puff Daddy in the long-sleeved, sheer, printed dress with a neckline slashed to the navel. The dress featured a thigh high slit and a backless cut out making it one of her most revealing red carpet looks.

Google was not alone in crediting the dress as a lucrative turning point, as its creator, Donatella Versace, also noticed a popularity surge. Versace said: “It was an unexpected success. The next day Jennifer was all over the place with people talking about her in that dress.”

Schmidt said: “At the time it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no sure-fire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: J Lo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.”
