Armani pledges allegiance to ditch fur

In agreement with the Fur Free Alliance, the Armani Group has made an admirable step in kicking the use of fur to the curb. The new policy will be in effect as of the autumn/winter 2016 season.

In this day and age, highly advanced technological development has allowed manufacturers to produce alternative synthetics to substitute the contentious material.

Giorgio Armani has declared war on fur alongside his prominent industry colleagues such as Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.

“I am pleased to announce that the Armani Group has made a firm commitment to abolish the use of animal fur in its collections. Technological progress made over the years allows us to have valid alternatives at our disposal that render the use of cruel practices unnecessary as regards animals,” said the Italian designer.

It comes as no surprise that Armani’s innovative thinking and compassion towards the environment and animals has been praised by animal rights activists throughout. Chairman of the Fur Free Alliance Jon Viding had this to say: “the announcement makes it clear that designers and consumers can have creative freedom and luxury, all without supporting animal cruelty”.

According to the Fur Free Alliance, a recent test was conducted by German independent research laboratory Bremer Umweltinstitut. Harmful levels of formaldehyde and ethoxylates were found on fur trimmings of well-known brands such as Canada Goose. The hazardous chemical compounds have great potential for triggering a hormonal imbalance through direct skin contact with the material.

With animal, environmental and health concerns in mind, it is more crucial than ever for an industry with such power to bear more corporate responsibility in regards to mass producing its goods. One can hope that additional luxury goods brands in the near future will follow Armani’s footsteps in striving for a more sustainable fashion future.
