World Championship, day six: Carter and Williams progress in last-16 round

The last of the remaining two first-round matches finished with Ali Carter winning by 10-2 over Mark Davis and Mark Williams’ 10-6 victory against the Chinese player Liu Chuang.

 

“Captain” Ali Carter landed safely into the Last-16 round after he crashed his opponent Mark Davis by 10-2.

 

A great collection of breaks like 65, 49, 72, 101, 76 and 57 were guaranteeing Carter an 8-1 lead after the first session, the last one being completed in just a few minutes with Davis winning his second and last frame and the Essex man sealing his victory with runs of 44, 48 and a beautiful 132 clearance.

 

Mark Williams, who hasn’t had a very prolific season, finally seemed to start finding form his 10-6 victory over Liu Chuang sending him in a classical clash against an old-time rival, Ronnie O’Sullivan.

 

If at the beginning of the match the players shared frames, from two apiece Williams practically stormed in by firing in breaks of 43, 46, 72 and 111 to close the first session by being 6-3 ahead.

 

The same attitude was the key for starting the last session, runs of 72, 40 and 49 putting the player nicknamed The Welsh Potting Machine at 9-3.

 

Liu fought back and took three frames on a row prolonging the end of the match, but as the 16^th frame kicked off Williams used runs of 22 and 33 to close the deal.

 

Also today, the first of the last-16 round matches kicked off, the first session ending with Neil Robertson taking a 5-3 lead over David Gilbert as well as Scotland’s Stephen Maguire over Joe Perry.
