At an intimate runway show in Chelsea’s Art Beam, Vivienne Hu presented her spring/summer 2017 collection. The Swarovski collective designer set the tone for the show by providing VIP guests with a velvet choker with a large Swarovski crystal charm in a deep shade of moody purple.

The collection seemed designed to take the Hu customer and dress her for any occasion. Hu is known for blending European, American and Asian influences, and these could be found running through the collection in both the silhouettes and patterns. While multiple influences clearly went into the designs, the strongest seemed to be the 90s looks that have been trending for the past few seasons. There were some stand-out pieces, for example the beautiful slip dresses done in several lengths and colours looked fresh and flattering. I can see fans of Hu’s designs wanting these in multiples. Additionally the two-piece cropped tops with matching fitted skirts were lovely, especially in the textural soft blush iteration. Hu’s outerwear also stood out: her beautiful spring coats would give instant polish to any outfit.

There were strong 90s references in the styling as well. Models wore choppy bobbed wigs with baby bangs and streaks of pink woven randomly through them giving them the appearance of the women who have done the colour themselves. Makeup was minimal, a nearly bare face with just a pop of pink on the lips in a shade that matched the hair. The overall effect reminded me a bit of Claire Danes from My So-Called Life. This strong styling was a tremendous help in pulling together an expansive collection with many inspirations.

Overall, fans of the brand will be pleased with the evolution of this fashion-forward yet wearable brand and spring’s styles just may attract some new fans looking easy, flattering pieces to add to their wardrobes.
