Chickenshed Theatre: Peter Pan YouTube premiere

Chickenshed Theatre: Peter Pan YouTube premiere | Theatre review

Once again Chickenshed Theatre are breaking the boundaries of modern theatre, as they have been for the past 40 years, this time with an original production of the story of Peter Pan via the company’s YouTube channel.

Co-directed by Christine Niering, Jonathan Morton, Dave Carvey and Louise Perry, it is a beautiful and inspirational show, filled with gentle and well-crafted performances, as well as some interesting directing flair. The music by Dave Catey and Jo Collins is innovative and catchy, with the former collaborating with Paul Morrall on thought-provoking lyrics. The diversity of the cast is striking, from experienced actors who have trained and spent all their professional lives at Chickenshed to young children who are just dipping their toes in the theatre. Some beautifully executed stunts, paired with impressive costumes and set design, provide a unique, almost immersive experience.

The current YouTube release of the musical – the first since its original incarnation in 2014 – is partnered with the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital Charity, raising funds for research and treatment of the most complex health conditions in children. It is free to watch, but viewers have the opportunity to make a donation and maintain the legacy of the story, which started when JM Barrie gifted its rights to the hospital in 1929. London-based company Chickenshed is known for its pioneering work in inclusive theatre, focusing its mission on inclusion, education, outreach and charity, thus Peter Pan is truly its poster show. In addition, a newly created audio adaptation of the classic tale is also available online on the organisation’s homepage, performed by the star cast and children of GOSH.

This production is a beautiful illustration of the possibilities of a world that could be all-inclusive and loving – and a reminder to “believe in fairies”, whomever or whatever they may be.
