“It’s a neon-soaked love letter to the 80s”: Martha Plimpton, Eliza Butterworth, Jack Rowan and Tahirah Sharif on A Town Called Malice

“It’s a neon-soaked love letter to the 80s”: Martha Plimpton, Eliza Butterworth, Jack Rowan and Tahirah Sharif on A Town Called Malice

A Town Called Malice is the western-infused, 80s-set new crime thriller series from director Nick Love, who is known for his gritty dramas that capture the lives of the British working class, from The Football Factory to The Firm. The story centres on young Gene Lord, played by Jack Rowan (Noughts and Crosses), whose family runs a south London crime syndicate. After a gang fight goes wrong, he and his new fiancée, Cindy (Tahirah Sharif), escape to the Costa Del Sol, where they are soon joined by the rest of the criminal family and drawn into the underworld of the sunny Spanish coast. All unfolds in high-paced colourful fashion, with a good dollop of humour and the 80s fully embraced, from the costumes to the iconic soundtrack. An epic supporting cast features The Goonies‘s Martha Plimpton (sporting an ace East End accent no less), and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels‘s Jason Flemyng.

The Upcoming had a lovely chat with Plimpton and Eliza Butterworth about the show, why they loved working with Love, and the fun they had on set recreating the era.

We also spoke with Rowan and Sharif about the Bonnie and Clyde vibes of the series and their characters, and wanting to bring joy and entertainment to viewers.
