“Laughing transcends all nationalities and boundaries”: Matt Youngberg on Bad Luck Spot

Luck was the feature-length comedy animated film from Skydance Animation, directed by Peggy Holmes, which hit screens last summer and captured the imagination of viewers old and young with its creative riff on the concept of luck, brought to life in vivid colour with voices from the likes of Simon Pegg to Whoopi Goldberg. Now, just in time for St Patrick’s Day, a spin-off short film has landed, courtesy of director Matt Youngberg (Transformers: Animate, DuckTales), featuring the Minion-reminiscent Hazmat Bunnies going about their daily chores of ridding the Land of Luck of any tiny crumbs of bad luck.

The Upcoming spoke to the filmmaker about why he wanted to make the short film, the endless possibilities animation provides storytellers, and how the medium has evolved and continues to do so.

Bad Luck Spot is released on Apple TV+ on 17th March 2023.
