Rory McIlroy has claimed his second win on the USPGA Tour in a month after winning the Deutsch Bank Championship in Boston.

In doing so, he took the lead in the Fed Ex cup with only two events remaining and stretched the gap as the world’s number one golfer.

This is the first time Mcilroy has competed in the Fed Ex playoffs.

The 23 year old leapfrogged former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen who started the day three shots in front.

The South African still had a chance of forcing a playoff but watched as his 15 foot birdie putt agonizingly slide past the hole on the 72nd hole.

Tiger Woods continued his strong season finishing 3rd 2 shots behind and in doing so became the first player to earn $100 million in career earnings.

Phil Mickelson had his best finish since The Masters finishing 4th.

The win in one of the best fields of the year comes just a month after McIlroy claimed his second major championship the USPGA to go with his 2011 US Open title at Congressional.

McIlroy has turned around an average year in which at one stage missed 4 out of 5 cuts into one that could potentially be his best.

The critics that suggested Rory wasn’t handling his mantle as the games next superstar and that his high profile romance to Tennis player Caroline Wozniaki was taking it’s toll on the Northern Irishman have seemingly gone quiet after his stellar run of form.

After his win Rory said to have ‘learnt’ from his mistakes and how to handle big wins and expectations placed upon him since his triumph at the US Open.

The penultimate event of the Fed Ex cup play-offs now heads to Crooked Stick in Indiana for the BMW Championship and features the remaining 70 players still in with a chance to claim the top prize.
