“The storytelling and visuals are unbelievable”: Toni DiTerlizzi, Bobs Gannaway, Terri Hatcher and Jeanine Mason on WondLa

This animated fantasy-based series WondLa is an adaptation of the trilogy of the same name by author Tony Diterlizzi and features a famed ensemble voice cast that bring it to life on screen. The story follows a girl called Eva (Jeanine Mason) who was born into an underground spacious capsule and raised by an empathetic robot, Muthr (Terri Hatcher), until eventually her teenage curiosity gets the better of her and she ends up leaving the safe compound to find out if there other humans like herself out there.

Throughout her action-packed adventure in this imaginative world, there are mythical creatures that can fly, breathtaking landscapes with colourful flora and fauna, and a dreamlike ethereal colourscape. The narrative follows the journey of Eva as she learns who she can trust, faces perils that question her survival in the outside world and the bonds of found family and friendships that she has never experienced before.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to the original book series writer Toni DiTerlizzi, who shared what the story is about, the inspiration behind it and what it was like working with the incredible voice cast.

We chatted to Bobs Gannaway about bringing the book trilogy to life, collaborating with Diterlizzi and working through the dialogue with the voice cast, some of whom he has worked with on previous projects.

Hatcher talked about voicing her role as the robotic character of Muthr and the fine line of adding emotive tones to that part.

Jeanine Mason about her role in the series, what it was about this story that appealed to her and some of the meaningful messages the narrative explores as it comes to life on screen.
