“I was truly inspired by them. It’s an experience I will never forget”: Sue Kim on The Last of the Sea Women

The Last of the Sea Women is an exceptional documentary telling the story of the sea divers’ community, traditionally called haenyeo. It is a homage to their tradition, sacrifice and strength. The main creative force behind this project, Sue Kim, spent a couple of years understanding sea women’s culture and became truly inspired by them.

We spoke to the director, who told us more about her personal experiences on the main topic. In the interview, she guided us through certain themes: she explained who the eponymous sea women are, why she decided to tell their story, how she tried to preserve the memory of their tradition and history, and how she gained the trust of this community of female divers.
