“It really brought home how much we lose by not communicating”: Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard on The Extraordinary Miss Flower at London Film Festival 2024

“It really brought home how much we lose by not communicating”: Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard on The Extraordinary Miss Flower at London Film Festival 2024

Described by its directors as “part film, part theatre, part fever dream”, The Extraordinary Miss Flower is an imaginative exploration of creativity, memory and human connection. The story begins with the discovery of a suitcase filled with letters from the 1960s and 70s, addressed to Geraldine Flower. Decades later, Geraldine’s stories inspire Icelandic musician Emilíana Torrini to return to the studio after a hiatus. Directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, the performance film unfolds through a mix of live music performances, dramatic readings and surreal scenes that blur the lines between film and theatre.

In an interview with The Upcoming, The Extraordinary Miss Flower’s directing duo reflect on their favourite memories from the letters and share their thoughts on the fading tradition of letter-writing.
