“There’s this invisible labour we’re not aware of”: Laura Carreira on On Falling at London Film Festival 2024

Laura Carreira’s debut film On Falling explores the human toll of online shopping through the circumstances of Aurora, a Portuguese worker in an algorithm-driven fulfilment centre in Scotland. Subjected to harsh conditions where their performance is constantly monitored and under assessment, Aurora’s life is a constant struggle of hunger, financial instability and emotional exhaustion, even as she works tirelessly in the dehumanising system. Despite brief moments of hope, Carreria depicts the crushing weight of Aurora’s survival in a powerful commentary on exploitation and despair in today’s gig economy.

In an interview with The Upcoming, Carreira and producer Jack Thomas O’Brien discuss how she realised it was the right time to make the film and rethinking the idea of work under capitalism.
