King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard unveil Grow Wings and Fly video, announce orchestral tour for Phantom Island album
Australian rock group King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have released the video for Grow Wings and Fly, a track from their upcoming album Phantom Island, scheduled to be released on 13th June 2024 via their own label, p(doom) records. The band’s latest visual offering arrives ahead of a planned European and UK tour set for later this year and follows earlier singles from the album, including the jazz-inflected title track and high-energy Deadstick.
The video for Grow Wings and Fly features band member Ambrose Kenny-Smith emerging from the sea, depicted in an aquatic setting before being returned to the water. Video director Hayden Somerville explained, “There are so many strange and beautiful ways to grow wings and fly. We had a very special time down the coast with the band and our crew, releasing our sea creature – who somehow makes me feel a little ill and completely full of joy at the same time.”
Phantom Island is the prolific Melbourne sextet’s 27th album and their second to appear via p(doom). The group, consisting of Stu Mackenzie, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Harwood and Michael Cavanagh, has built a reputation for blending diverse genres across their extensive discography, from psychedelic and electronic to jazz and now orchestral influences. The new album is described by the band as a departure from their previous release, Flight b741, with more introspective themes and elaborate arrangements incorporating strings, horns, and woodwind. Bandleader Mackenzie commented, “When I was younger, I was just interested in freaking people out, but as I get older, I’m much more interested in connecting with people.”
Phantom Island’s release will be followed by a string of live dates in 2025, including a series of residency performances in major European cities such as Lisbon, Barcelona and Athens, as well as UK dates. Notably, the band will perform their Phantom Island Orchestral Tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 4th November 2025, featuring the Covent Garden Sinfonia under the direction of conductor Chad Kelly. The tour will alternate between orchestral and “rave set” shows, with the latter inspired by King Gizzard’s previous electronic album The Silver Cord. The European tour will also include collaborations with local orchestras, resulting in orchestral performances unique to each city.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard has released more than two dozen albums since their 2012 debut. Their willingness to experiment with different musical styles has drawn critical attention, with The Times recently describing them as “a far-reaching, sophisticated proposition,” and The Guardian noting their engagement with themes such as societal discord and climate issues.
