“This season broke the mould of what the show was”: Cat Missal, Costa D’Angelo, Sonia Mena, Alice Crowder, Spencer House and Branden Cook on on Tell Me Lies season three
The third series of this complex drama, adapted by screenwriter Meagan Oppenheimer from the book by Carola Lovering of the same name, opens with the start of a new spring semester at Baird College, where the friendship group return back to campus. Wrigley (Spencer House) is dealing with the aftermath of his brother Drew’s death; supported by his girlfriend Pippa (Sonia Mena), whilst Bree (Cat Missal) is tackling issues in her own love life as she moves forward with her relationship with Evan (Brandon Cook), and Lucy (Grace Patton) and Stephen (Jackson White) start to branch out of their toxic entanglement.
Shifting timelines and new characters deepen the layers of the narrative this time round as the story churns out further plot twists, intrigue and darker themes of sexual assault and teacher/pupil grooming. As the focus moves away from just Stephen and Lucy, there’s time for this series to breathe life into the other characters’ story arcs. The relationship that sparks between Pippa and Diana (Alicia Crowder), and the arrival of a new resident drug dealer called Alex (Costa d’Angelo), who turns out to be Bree’s foster brother, are just some of the new strands that allow viewers to get closer to some of the returning characters this season.
The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to Sonia Mena and Alice Crowder about the script for this new installment, approaching the difficult topic of grief, and the scenes they had most fun filming.
We spoke to Cat Missal and Costa D’Angelo about what the introduction of his character meant to her storylines, and how grateful she was to get the chance to tell more of her story. They also spoke about how their characters’ difficult childhoods shaped them, and the way in which the toxic relationship between Lucy and Stephen would be dealt with differently in the friendship group if the series were positioned in a different timeline.
Spencer House and Branden Cook told us what it was like coming back on board for a new series and filming in a new location, the storylines that shift through different years and how the toxic heartbeat to the narrative affected their characters.
