“I think it’s important to not introduce our children to short, swipeable content so quickly”: Kamryn Smith, Scott Schultz and Christian Jacobs on Yo Gabba GabbaLand season two

Created by Emmy Award-nominated kids’ TV veterans Scott Schultz and Christian Jacobs, Yo Gabba Gabba is a series that first aired in the late 2000s and ran until 2015. It has recently found new life in the fast-paced age of TikTok and streaming with the release of Yo Gabba GabbaLand’s first season in 2024. This latest iteration introduces a new host, Kammy Kam, played wonderfully by Kamryn Smith, and explores the magical realm of Yo Gabba GabbaLand while retaining the familiar staples of life lessons, education, laughter and musical numbers. In this second season, the cast will traverse new places, alongside welcoming fresh faces and returning guests to the lineup – from Tiffany Haddish to David Arquette, with performances by Sylvan Esso, CHVRCHES and The Aquabats!, to name but a few.

The Upcoming caught up with Smith to discuss the similarities and differences between the original show and this most recent addition to the franchise, focusing on her personal journey of watching the series throughout her childhood and stepping up as the new host of Yo Gabba GabbaLand. Smith spoke about the pressures that came with reviving the title with a new host, as well as the feedback and support she has received over the past two years that helped her feel more comfortable in the role. The young actor also reflected on the lessons to be learned from Yo Gabba GabbaLand and the importance of believing in oneself.

We also spoke with creators Schultz and Jacobs, whose passion for quality kids’ media shines through in their interview. They discussed the significance of educational and narrative storytelling for children, especially in an era of the internet dominated by short-form and streaming content. The pair teased what kids can look forward to in this second season, from musical guests to new props and locations that help elevate the series even further. The duo also delved into their process of creating something parents can enjoy alongside their children, mindful that many of the show’s original fans may now have families of their own.
